Head & Shoulders as Face Wash

The Viral Claim

"Washing your face with anti-dandruff shampoo cures hundreds of tiny bumps on your forehead in a week."

Why it exploded on TikTok

Dermatologists on TikTok actually validated this hack for a very specific condition, leading thousands of teens to incorrectly try it for all types of acne.

Medical Expert Review

This trend is highly nuanced. Head & Shoulders contains Zinc Pyrithione, which is an excellent antifungal agent. If you have Malassezia Folliculitis (fungal acne) -which presents as hundreds of tiny, uniform, itchy bumps on the forehead -this hack actually works. However, 90% of teen acne is bacterial (Acne Vulgaris). If you use harsh shampoo on bacterial acne, the heavy surfactants (sodium lauryl sulfate) will strip your moisture barrier and trigger a massive overproduction of oil, making regular acne much worse.

Safe Alternatives

Don't risk destroying your skin barrier. Instead of head & shoulders as face wash, utilize these clinically-proven, teen-safe alternatives.
