DIY Lemon Juice Toner

Final Verdict
Dangerous

Dangerous for Skin Barrier

The Viral Claim

"Swiping pure lemon juice over your face naturally bleaches away dark acne scars and kills acne-causing bacteria."

Why it exploded on TikTok

Promoted heavily by 'all-natural DIY skincare' creators who claim that the natural Vitamin C and high acidity of lemons make it a cheap, potent chemical exfoliant.

Medical Expert Review

While Vitamin C is excellent for brightening, pure lemon juice is incredibly volatile and completely unformulated. Lemons are incredibly acidic (pH of 2), which violently lowers the skin's surface pH, burning the barrier away entirely. Furthermore, lemon juice contains furanocoumarins -compounds that cause phytophotodermatitis. If you put lemon juice on your face and step into the sun, it triggers a severe phototoxic chemical reaction resulting in massive permanent blisters and extreme hyperpigmentation.

Safe Alternatives

Don't risk destroying your skin barrier. Instead of diy lemon juice toner, utilize these clinically-proven, teen-safe alternatives.
